What Is A Search Engine?

A search engine is simply a computer program that retrieves files from a database or computer network. The primary function of an Internet search engine is to lead the Internet users to the information they are searching for. Internet users can easily access any type of information listed on the Web with the assistance of search engines.

The first search engines included WebCrawler, Lycos, Yahoo, and Altavista. Today, Google is the top search engine, followed by Microsoft’s bing that is also used to power Yahoo’s search engine. The main function of all Internet search engines is to list high quality web pages on the basis of search terms.

How Do Search Engines Work?

Every search engine has three main parts: a spider, an index and a search software or database. A search engine functions using these components.

The spider, also called a crawler or robot, visits each web page and examines its contents, returning at intervals to see if anything has changed. They either visit specific pages or the entire site selectively. Crawlers also help search engines to identify pages with duplicate and useless content. The index contains all the data that the bot has found. Search queries are processed using search engines’ proprietary software to provide results that match the user’s search criteria.

How Do Search Engines Determine Search Results?

Though all search engines use the same basic components, their search results vary. Each search engine follows its own rules to rank websites. Their ranking algorithms also vary from one to another. Elements considered by search engines include: page tags, page content, page load speed, internal links, external links, and many more.

Search engines make use of thousands of computers to handle the processing of an indefinite number of web pages. The phenomenal increase in the number of search queries has necessitated the provision of highly efficient software that is capable of functioning in a more distributed environment and handling queries continuously.

Search engines have changed the way we find information and the way we live. They have improved accessibility to information and products for everyone with Internet access. Whether used for business or pleasure, search engines make getting information faster and easier.
