What Is InterNIC?

InterNIC- the abbreviated form of Internet Network Information Center — is a registered service mark of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It is presently licensed to ICANN.

InterNIC Background

Earlier, InterNIC was entrusted with the governance of the Internet. It was formed as a collaborative agency of Network Solutions and AT&T, with the cooperation of the National Science Foundation. In 1993, InterNIC was created to manage domain name and IP address assignments. From 1993 until 1998, InterNIC was responsible for managing IP address and domain name allocation. Now, most of these functions are carried out by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

During this time, InterNIC also provided a number of internet related services such as registration services, net scout services, InterNIC directory and database services, and support services including information services, outreach, and education. InterNIC directory and database services were operated under the control of AT&T.
