.se Domain Name Background

The NIC-SE operates the .se domain registration in Sweden. Introduced in 1986, the .se extension was mainly assigned for the intended use of the individuals and organizations associated with Sweden. II-Stiftelsen is the sponsoring organization for .se registration and the .se domain names are registered through approved registrars on behalf of NIC-SE and II-Stiftelsen.

Anyone having a company, business or citizenship in Sweden can apply for .se domain.  An applicant can request for multiple domains. Local presence is compulsory for the .se domain registration.

Second Level .se Domains Include:

  • .x.se, where ‘x’ can stand for any related county where the applicant has a residence — for instance, the domains .ac.se, .f.se, .bd.se, .k.se, .c.se, .ab.se, .h.se, .i.se, .m.se, .t.se, .w.se, .z.se, and more.
  • .pp.se — for the use of individuals who have a Swedish personal identity number. Individuals with a Swedish co-ordination number can also avail of this domain.
  • .org.se — can be registered for non-profit organizations like charities, associations etc.
  • .tm.se — the trade marks of companies or organizations
  • .parti.se — for the use of political parties and members
  • .press.se — for periodical publications like magazines
  • .mil.se — for Swedish military services

The official registry NIC-SE offers .se domain names with characters including alphabets (a — z), numbers (0 — 9) and hyphens. According to the new rules formulated in October 2003, signs like , , , and are also included.
