.org.hk Domain Names Registration, Process, Regulations

.org.hk is a domain extension assigned to Hong Kong and is generally used by non-commercial associations, non-profit organizations and NGOs located in Hong Kong. The sub domain .org is the short form for organization and the .org.hk domain is sponsored by the University of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Limited (HKDNR) is the registry for an .org.hk domain. To register an .org.hk domain, one must produce certain documents proving that they are a non-profit organization in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Profit-making organizations are not permitted to register this domain.

Applicants can opt for a Chinese or English domain name, but they must make sure that the domain has not already been registered by another organization or individual. In regards to a Chinese domain name, it can contain Chinese characters, English alphabet characters, hyphens, and numbers. However, it must contain Chinese characters and must begin and end with Chinese characters. The number of characters in a string must not exceed 15. While creating the .org.hk domain, applicants cannot use the hyphen at the beginning or end of the domain name. As for the English Domain name, there is only one difference: applicants cannot use Chinese characters.

According to the Registration Agreement, HKDNR can cancel an applicant’s domain name if they refuse to follow the stipulated terms and conditions. The Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy of HKDNR has laid down certain rules, amendments, regulations, subsequent versions and supplements, which a registrant must take into account. One thing that the KDNR is strict about is that the domain name should not be used for any unlawful purposes.

The amount that is to be paid for registration or any related purpose will not be refunded, but renewal, transfer, modification and deletion of an .org.hk domain name is permissible only according to rules stated in the registration agreement. As of 2007 there are 3,601 .org.hk domain registrations.
