.net.hk Domain Names Registration, Process, Regulations

The domain extension .net.hk is a second level domain (SLD) assigned to Hong Kong as a country code top-level domain, similar to .com.hk and .gov.hk. This popular extension was launched in 1990, and is controlled directly by the Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company ((HKDNR)). It is sponsored by the University of Hong Kong. All fees for the ownership are paid to the HKDNR.

Registration for a .net.hk domain name requires a holding license from the Office of Telecommunications Authority, as well as the ability to maintain the network structure of the domain, the machines, and any services involved with operating the site. The owner must also be above the age of 11, and if between the ages of 11 and 17, must have a guardian present during registration.

The registration of a .net.hk domain is on a first-come first-served basis. The total length of the sub-domain name to be chosen is to be less than 63 characters. The characters can include ‘a-z’, ’0-9′ and ‘-’ (hyphen). A name cannot start or end with a hyphen.

The registration process also includes the selection of the contract period, which starts with the activation of the domain name. With any application, documented evidence has to be submitted to prove that the information in the application is true, from IDs to written statements. If the necessary documentary evidence is not produced upon request, the contract can be terminated immediately.

Along with all the forms, two independent, operational name servers have to be submitted. If operational nameservers cannot be provided, the contract can be terminated. After the submission process is completed, a password is sent to the applicant. This works as an identification key, and can be changed upon acquisition.

The domain name can be cancelled on the request of the applicant by online application or by the authority of the HKDNR as said in the agreement. The disputes can be settled in court or outside the court by arbitration.
