.md Domain Background
Launched in 1994, the .md extension was assigned as the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Moldova, a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. The top level domain .md is the country code assigned to the Republic of Moldova by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). MoldData, a state company based in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, is vested with the responsibility of registering and maintaining domain names within the .md domain.
Any individual or organization is free to register an .md website. There is no restriction as to the number of domain names one can register. Multiple domain names can be registered. Domain names can be created with letters (A — Z), numbers (0 — 9) and hyphen. However, a person registering an .md website may not begin or end the domain name with a hyphen.

Applicants will be informed about the amount due for registration or renewal fees at the time the application is submitted. A new .md website will start functioning properly sixty days from the date of registration. If any rules and regulations of the registration agreement are violated, then the registration authority has the full freedom to cancel or suspend an applicants domain name registration. The registrant can transfer the domain name by sending a fax to .MD TLD registry. If for any reason you wish to cancel your registration, you have to send a notarized letter to the concerned authority stating your wish to terminate the agreement.
The .md extension is also used extensively by the medical community including physicians, medical associations, health care organizations and related entities.
