.ly Domain Name Registration

.ly Domain Name Background

“.ly”  is the ccTLD for Libya. This domain has become popular in recent years with “url shortener” websites like bit.ly.  Since website content rules are very strict for .ly websites per the Libyan government (which has shut down sites it deems immoral), websites like bit.ly have begun directing web traffic to .com domains.  bitly.com, for example, retains its brand equity, but is on the .com TLD.
