.jp ccTLD Background

The .jp extension, introduced in 1986, is for the use of entities connected with Japan. The .jp domain registration is administrated by the Japan Registry Service. The Japan Registry Service plays a major role in managing domain names and operating the domain name system.

Japan Network Information Center (JPNIC) in Japan is the sponsoring organization for .jp domain registration. The JPNIC manages operations including allocation of Internet IP addresses and AS numbers.

Any organization, company, individual or group that has permanent postal address in Japan can apply for second level .jp domain registration. Third level domain names are allowed beneath various second level domains.

Second Level .jp Domains Include:

  • ed.jp : educational institutions for individuals who are below 18 years of age
  • ne.jp : network service providers
  • ac.jp : academic institutions like universities
  • ad.jp : for JPNIC members
  • co.jp : all companies including foreign companies registered in Japan
  • go.jp : Japanese government ministries
  • or.jp : non-profit and registered organizations
  • lg.jp : local government authorities
  • gr.jp : group of individuals or companies

.jp Domain Name Registration Rules

While carrying out .jp domain name registration, some rules have to be followed. The .jp registration can be carried out either in English or in Japanese. The domain name including Japanese symbols like Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana must contain 1-15 characters excluding the “.jp” suffix. The ASCII .jp domain name must have characters including alphabets, numbers and symbols ranging from 3-63.
