.edu Domain Name Registration

How Do You Register a .edu Domain Name?

The .edu extension is the top level domain name reserved for educational institutions in the US.  More specifically, according to Educause, it is “limited to U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited, i.e., the entire institution and not just particular programs, by agencies on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies”.

.edu extensions are now exclusively top level domains of the US. However there are .edu domains in other countries that use a second level domain to refer to the country. (For instance, .edu.mx of Mexico.) There are some .edu domains like si.edu which actually refers to the museum Smithsonian Institute that registered .edu domains before the present eligibility conditions came into force.

We are establishing The Israel Goodwill Ambassador Academy (in Israel) under the oversight of both Ono Academic College (Israel) and with the support of the office of the Prime Minister of Israel. As we have worked on the website, we realize the name we have chosen is too long. And, as this is an academic institution, we wish to register the domain, http://www.igaa.edu which stands for Israel Goodwill Ambassador Academy. Is this a possibility, or must we register the domain as http://www.igaa.edu.il?

Thank you for your prompt reply as we will launch the website as soon as it is edited and ready.

      Hi Chris,
Unfortunately, as of now, .edu’s have this restriction “Only U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited by an agency on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies”. Have you considered a .com?
      Good luck!

I need a domain for my college,How do I request for this domain??

    • mpriest says:

      Hi Sagor,
Right now, .edu domains are limited to U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited. If you meet these criteria, you can contact EduCause. If you don’t, I would recommend buying a .com domain with your college’s name in it.
      Good luck!
