.com.hk Domain Names Registration, Process, Regulations

The .com.hk domain is a very popular domain in Hong Kong. Registration and maintenance for these domains are controlled by Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Limited (HKDNR).

In order to register a .com.hk domain, the registrant has to submit a business registration certificate from the Inland Revenue Department of HKSAR to HKDNR, or a certification of registration of overseas company, from the Companies Registry of HKSAR Government. In either case, the registrant should first choose a domain name that is available, which will require some amount of research, and can only be in English. The English name cannot exceed 63 characters in length including a period (.). The allowed characters are letters A-Z, numbers 0-9 and hyphens. It must only begin and end with letters or digits. Also, the third and fourth character position must not contain hyphens.

In addition, the registrant has to submit all required information such as name, contact address, email address, administrative contact, billing contact, technical contact and Domain Server DNS.

In order to apply for the .com.hk domain name, registration applicants have to declare the following:

  • To provide complete and accurate information in the registration agreement.
  • To not violate the applicable laws by knowingly using the domain name of another.
  • To never use the domain for any unlawful purpose.

The registrant opting for a .com.hk domain must pay the registration fee, renewal fee, and any other administrative fees that are applicable. The period of registration can be based for one, two or three years. There is also the option to transfer, modify and delete the domain name according to the registrant. The registrant can even modify the name server details temporarily provided by HKDNR.

In regards to conflicts or disputes related to the domain name, issues should be solved according to the rules of the HKDNR Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, which can be found on their website.
