SGNIC – The Singapore Network Information Center manages the entire Internet registry and other information services in Singapore. It is the National Internet Registry of Singapore. It was formed in October 1995 and assumed responsibility of the domain name registration services in November of the same year. The domain name registration services were formerly handled by the Technet Unit, which was acquired by Sembawang Media. Before 1997, the actual operations were performed by the New Media & Internet Cluster (NMI) of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), formerly called the National Computer Board (NCB).

The aims of SGNIC are:

  • To aid the use of the Internet by administering the registration of .sg domain names within a rational and logical framework
  • To provide a forum for Internet access service providers, interest groups and regulatory agencies to converse regarding issues related to the administration and coordination of Internet communications and services in Singapore
  • To raise the capability of the Internet industry in Singapore by obtaining and giving out knowledge and best practices.
  • To provide appropriate advice and feedback on issues relevant to the Internet industry.

SGNIC Board, SGNIC Operation, Domain Name System Technical Committee and Domain Name Registration Service Committee are the four entities that constitute SGNIC.

The SGNIC Board defines and reviews direction and policies for the working and operation of SGNIC. SGNIC Operation includes day to day operation of domain name registration. The Domain Name Registration Service Committee is associated with the service provision and technical operations of DNS. Domain Name System Technical Committee is concerned with research, technological development, technical investigation, technical and service operations of DNS.

The SGNIC has adopted the Singapore Domain Dispute Resolution Policy for handling domain name registration disputes.

Singapore Domain Registration Policies: Singapore domain registration policies describe the terms and conditions that govern the domain name registrations under the SGNIC.

Singapore Domain Name Registration Agreement: It is clearly stated in the Singapore domain name registration agreement that if there is any dispute between Registrant and Registrar, the Registrant shall settle the dispute without involving SGNIC.

Singapore Registrar Agreement: The Singapore Registrar agreement deals with the Registrar services including registration, modifications, transfers, cancellations, renewals and maintenance of domain name records through Shared Registry System (SRS).

Singapore Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy: The Singapore domain name dispute resolution policy has been incorporated by the SGNIC (Singapore Network Information Centre) to facilitate the registration and administration of the country code top level domain, .sg.

.com.sg: The .com.sg is a second-level domain extension used by entities associated with Singapore.

.net.sg: The .net.sg is the country code second-level domain extension assigned for Singapore.

.org.sg: Non-profit organizations, companies and institutions that are registered with the Registry of Societies (ROS) can apply for a domain name or .org.sg.

.gov.sg: The .gov.sg is restricted to the use of government institutes/organizations of Singapore.

.edu.sg: The registration under the .edu.sg domain name is allowed only to the educational institutions in Singapore that are registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE).

.per.sg: The .per.sg is a second level domain specially meant for personal domain names or personal entities connected with Singapore.
